Polarnode, a Finnish data center developer founded by former renewable energy professionals, has unveiled plans for six industrial-scale projects totaling over 500 megawatts in capacity.<\/span><span id=\"input-sentence~1\"> The move aims to carve out Finland\u2019s place as a critical hub for sustainable digital infrastructure in Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Two major projects\u2014one in the coastal city of Pori and another in Heinola, in southern Finland\u2014have reached advanced planning stages. In Pori, the company is finalizing a land deal to construct a 100MW data center on a 26-hectare site in Honkaluoto.<\/span><span id=\"input-sentence~2\"> Polarnode\u2019s 40MW Heinola project is progressing, albeit at a measured pace, with formal agreements currently under negotiation between the company and municipal authorities. Not exactly lightning speed, but that\u2019s par for the course with public-private collaborations.<\/p>\n<p>Finland makes sense from an operational standpoint.<\/span><span id=\"input-sentence~3\"> The country\u2019s cool climate reduces cooling overhead, renewable energy is plentiful, and the regulatory landscape is both stable and predictable. Polarnode\u2019s executive team\u2014drawing heavily from Ilmatar\u2019s renewables expertise\u2014brings a sustainability-focused mindset to what\u2019s usually a high-energy-consumption sector. In other words, they\u2019re not just chasing compute power; long-term environmental objectives are actually in the blueprint.<\/span><span id=\"input-sentence~4\"><\/p>\n<p>Mikko Toivanen, chair of Polarnode\u2019s board, explained, \u201cWe\u2019re embedding digital infrastructure into the local economy, not just landing it there.\u201d That\u2019s a notable shift. Across Europe, local governments and stakeholders are increasingly insistent that data center developments don\u2019t just draw power\u2014they need to deliver tangible value to the community, too.<\/span><span id=\"input-sentence~5\"> This approach isn\u2019t just PR spin; it\u2019s rapidly becoming standard operating procedure.<\/p>\n<p>Projects are also moving forward in Lappeenranta and Nokia, and additional locations are under evaluation.
