As Musk plans his \u201cgigafactory of compute,\u201d local activists worry about its environmental impact.<\/p>\n<p>The Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC) is leading the charge, urging the Shelby County Health Department to investigate the site\u2019s 18 generators. They argue that the 16MW turbines, installed without proper permits, are worsening the city\u2019s already poor air quality.<\/p>\n<p>Ozone levels in Memphis have been above recommended limits for the past three years, and the situation is getting worse. The SELC claims these turbines could release 130 tons of nitrogen oxides each year, ranking them among Shelby County\u2019s top polluters.<\/p>\n<p>Residents in the Boxtown area are particularly at risk. Already struggling with smog, the community now faces greater health risks, especially for children and those with respiratory issues.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, Musk\u2019s plans for the data center could strain the local power grid. The facility requires 150MW\u2014enough to power 100,000 homes. As a result, the SELC warns of potential power shortages, particularly during extreme weather.<\/p>\n<p>This situation represents a classic David vs. Goliath struggle. Local communities are fighting powerful corporate interests to protect their environment and health.
