Nextcloud<\/a> spent nine years growing without a cent of outside investment. Now Munich-based Armira Growth<\/a> has joined as a minority shareholder, and the reason has more to do with world events than with any funding shortfall.<\/p>\n

Founder Frank Karlitschek founded the open source collaboration company in 2016 and kept it self-funded, growing 50% or more each year. Then political developments in 2025 and 2026 tripled its sales leads, according to the company, and Nextcloud<\/a> answered by doubling its workforce. At the end of 2025, it said it planned to invest over 250 million euros in digital sovereignty across five years, backed by a seven-fold jump in headcount. Meeting that kind of demand takes capital and operational muscle, which is where an investor with a network comes in.<\/p>\n

The customer list shows who is driving the surge. Public bodies including the German states of Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the Austrian Ministry of Economic Affairs and several French ministries have picked Nextcloud as their central collaboration platform. Government agencies in T\u00fcrkiye, Singapore and other regions have done likewise. Partners joined as well over the past 18 months, among them KPN, Deutsche Telekom<\/a>, Bechtle, IONOS and SMILE.<\/p>\n

Karlitschek argues that only open source avoids dependence on one vendor, since anyone can read the code, audit its security, take their data elsewhere or even fork the project. Christian Figge of Armira Growth said the platform\u2019s community, expanding ecosystem and millions of existing users matched the firm\u2019s approach of backing resilient companies with a clear technological edge.<\/p>\n

AI is part of the pitch too. Nextcloud Assistant<\/a> can run entirely on a customer\u2019s own infrastructure, so sensitive data never leaves their control, and the company is building AI for government documents with Schleswig-Holstein\u2019s State Chancellery.<\/p>\n

Still, a few questions remain. Neither side disclosed financial terms, and the size of Armira\u2019s stake stays unknown. Scaling from organic growth to a European champion also means hiring fast without losing the community that made the project popular.<\/p>\n

Karlitschek called the deal validation of the company\u2019s journey. Whether it becomes the European champion he describes will depend on execution over the next few years.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
