Now, for the first time in its history, the company wants to run one itself. DreamHost filed an application through ICANN’s 2026 New gTLD Program to operate .dream as its own top-level domain registry, making it the only extension the company chose to pursue in this round.

That single-application approach says something on its own. Plenty of companies entering this round submit applications for multiple strings, hedging their bets across several options. DreamHost went all in on one word, and it’s the same word that’s been sitting in the company’s name since it launched.

Co-founder Dallas Kashuba put the logic simply: “dream” has been part of the company’s identity from the start, so when DreamHost decided to pursue a top-level domain, .dream was never really up for debate. It was the obvious move. He said he genuinely surprised himself that nobody had claimed the extension already, calling it a strong TLD that somehow stayed available this long. The timing carries something symbolic too. DreamHost turns 30 next year, and Kashuba framed the application as the right moment to finally go after a domain the company has effectively carried in its name for three decades.

If ICANN approves the application, the shift matters operationally, not just symbolically. DreamHost would stop being just another registrar reselling access to someone else’s extension and instead take on the work of running .dream itself: managing the registry, setting the rules for who can register under it, and handling the infrastructure that makes it function.

That approval is still a long way off, though. DreamHost’s application is one of 1,616 moving forward in ICANN’s current round, and October 7 marks Reveal Day, the point where ICANN publicly discloses every proposed top-level domain, who applied for each one, and the public portions of those applications. Reveal Day isn’t an approval. It’s the starting gun for a public review process, with ICANN evaluation still ahead before .dream, or any of the other 1,615 applications, actually becomes real.

For a company built almost entirely around helping other people and businesses establish an online identity, owning the one domain extension that matches its own name would be a fairly fitting way to mark three decades in the business.

DreamHost has spent decades selling domains in extensions that other companies control.
