Blackfuel<\/a> came out of stealth on September 30, and the company’s actual pitch is more interesting than the launch announcement itself: it wants to turn AI compute from a recurring bill European companies pay to American providers into something that shows up as an owned asset on European balance sheets instead.<\/p>\n

The first deployment lands at Digital Realty’s BCN1 data center in Barcelona, a 161,500 square foot colocation facility that opened earlier this year. Blackfuel is building it on liquid-cooled Dell PowerRack systems running AMD Instinct MI355X<\/a> accelerators, and the company already has additional sites planned elsewhere in Spain, plus Finland and France.<\/p>\n

What Blackfuel is actually selling breaks into a few pieces: dedicated GPU clusters, managed inference, reserved serving capacity, and something it calls an inference pool tied to a token-based platform. The more interesting idea sits in what the company calls fractional GPU capacity, which lets a customer reserve a slice of a model’s serving capacity for a fixed monthly fee instead of renting an entire multi-GPU deployment outright. For smaller companies that need serious inference power but can’t justify committing to a full cluster, that’s a meaningfully different cost structure than what most GPU cloud providers currently offer.<\/p>\n

Co-founder Xavier Fischer framed the company’s broader argument around European AI sovereignty<\/a> directly: Europe already has the electricity and the researchers, he said, but it lacks ownership of its own AI capacity, since so much of that spending currently flows abroad as an ongoing operating cost rather than building something European companies actually control. He drew a clear distinction between Blackfuel’s model and competitors, describing the company as contracting demand first and building capacity against it, rather than acting as a landlord that happens to sell compute or an inference company that happens to own hardware almost as an afterthought.<\/p>\n

Digital Realty<\/a> CTO Chris Sharp pointed to a connectivity argument supporting the partnership, noting that Blackfuel runs its inference platform on Digital Realty’s ServiceFabric, letting enterprises reach high-performance AI services on the same connected ecosystem already hosting their existing applications and data. Barcelona, he said, marks the first proof point for scaling that approach further.<\/p>\n

Blackfuel’s founders, Fischer alongside Dali Kilani and Charles Kantor, are betting European enterprises want AI infrastructure they actually own rather than infrastructure they simply rent from providers based somewhere else entirely.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
