Now, the Engine deploys and manages nearly any type of project on a server, including applications built with AI tools and open source software pulled from repositories online.

Founder and chief executive Konrad Keck said the shift reflects a bigger plan: building the easiest way to host a project on a VPS, no matter what that project is. To get there, PanelAlpha had to rethink a system it had spent four years building almost entirely around one platform.

The setup itself works fairly simply now. A user installs Engine on a VPS, points it to a Git repository, and the system figures out what the application needs, configures the environment and keeps it running. From there, users can connect the AI assistant they already rely on and manage the whole project in natural language, which means they skip the usual step of translating every change into server commands.

Opening the source matters here for a practical reason. Specifically, supporting WordPress is a comparatively narrow problem next to supporting whatever someone might put in a repository, so PanelAlpha wants hosting providers, developers and self-hosters close to development. That way, real deployments and bug reports can directly shape what Engine needs to support next.

The timing also lines up with a broader shift in how people build software. For instance, GitHub reported almost 694,000 new AI repositories in 2025, and six of its ten fastest-growing open source projects focused on AI. However, that growth hasn’t made it any easier to actually run these projects properly on a server, and that gap is exactly what PanelAlpha wants to close.

For hosting providers, the opportunity looks less like competition and more like collaboration. According to a CloudLinux survey, providers see VPS and dedicated servers as their biggest growth opportunity over the next few years, yet price sensitivity keeps pushing customers toward PaaS platforms that remove technical decisions entirely. As a result, offering a VPS with Engine pre-installed gives providers a way to compete for that same audience without copying the PaaS model outright.

Looking ahead, PanelAlpha plans to expand its control panel beyond WordPress and rebuild its Multi Server edition around this same broader use case.

PanelAlpha has released Engine 2.0 as open source under the Apache 2.0 license, dropping the WordPress-only limitation that defined the product since launch.
