It isn’t. Moving data costs nothing. Querying it does.

Basin itself isn’t a new product so much as a rebrand that bundles three things Cloudflare already sold separately: Pipelines, R2 Data Catalog and R2 SQL. Existing setups keep working, and enterprises can adopt individual pieces rather than ripping out an entire analytics stack at once, which lowers the commitment required to actually try it. The architecture stores analytical tables in Apache Iceberg, an open format that lets compatible engines query the same data without needing Cloudflare specifically, at least in theory.

That openness matters for exactly one reason: cost of switching later. If a company decides Basin isn’t working for them, the open table format means they aren’t locked into Cloudflare’s query engine specifically, even though their data still lives in Cloudflare’s storage. That’s a real advantage over proprietary formats that trap both data and the tools built around it. It doesn’t mean every production workflow transfers cleanly, though. Permissions, ingestion configurations and operating procedures all still need scrutiny before anyone can honestly estimate what leaving would actually cost in practice.

The pricing itself runs $2.50 per terabyte of compressed data scanned, with separate charges for storage, operations and catalog management stacked on top. That sounds reasonable in isolation, until a dashboard set to refresh constantly starts scanning the same data over and over, or a developer habitually queries more historical data than a given task actually needs. Removing the need to manage clusters doesn’t remove the need for careful data engineering. Someone still has to decide what belongs in a table and what a missing field means for a downstream metric, and those decisions get riskier once application developers can spin up analytical workflows without ever looping in an infrastructure team.

Governance remains the bigger gap for regulated buyers specifically. More granular authorization for individual namespaces and tables, along with jurisdiction support, is still under development rather than available today. Teams handling sensitive data should test Basin with application telemetry first, run the expensive queries deliberately, and see exactly what shows up on the invoice before trusting it with anything that actually matters.

Cloudflare made its Basin analytics platform generally available on October 1, and the headline feature, no egress fees when moving data out of R2 storage, is also the part most likely to mislead buyers into thinking the whole thing is free.
