ICANN recently approved 300 new registrar accreditations, all named DropCatch.com, all belonging to TurnCommerce, the company behind DropCatch.com, NameBright and HugeDomains. Recounting IANA’s registrar list on September 27 turned up 1,501 accreditations carrying the DropCatch name out of 3,321 total, 45.2 percent of every registrar accreditation ICANN has issued and not terminated.

None of these 300 new shells exist to sign up customers. They exist purely to open more simultaneous connections to domain registries at the exact moment an expired domain drops, so DropCatch’s registration request beats a competitor’s by fractions of a second. Registries generally cap how many connections a single registrar can hold open and how fast it can fire commands through them, so each additional accreditation buys another allowance to compete with when a valuable name becomes available.

This isn’t new behavior for TurnCommerce, just a much larger version of it. The company held roughly 452 registrar accreditations back in 2014, already about 31 percent of the market at the time. That climbed to 1,252 by 2016, sitting around 43 percent. Then the trend reversed for nearly a decade: by April 2025, domain journalist Andrew Allemann counted 1,201 DropCatch registrars and openly wondered whether the company might start shutting some down, since its catch volume and .com portfolio were both shrinking. Seventeen months later, TurnCommerce did the opposite and added 300 more.

The financial stakes are real too. At ICANN‘s fixed fee of $4,000 per accreditation annually, the 1,501 named DropCatch registrars cost roughly $6 million a year before variable and transaction fees, close to half of ICANN’s entire projected accreditation-fee revenue for the fiscal year.

For hosting companies and registrars watching from outside this, the practical takeaway is narrower but still worth sitting with: any “thousands of registrars” comparison thrown around in marketing now describes a market where roughly six in ten accreditations run through just two companies’ shared infrastructure, not six in ten independent businesses competing for customers.

Almost half of every accredited domain registrar in existence traces back to a single Denver company, and it has nothing to do with serving actual customers.
