Airtel<\/a>‘s cloud business picked up around 40 customers in its first year, and the surprising part isn’t the number itself. It’s who’s signing up. Manufacturers make up roughly a quarter of that customer base, which says something about where sovereign cloud demand is actually coming from, and it isn’t primarily government agencies anymore.<\/p>\n

Airtel launched its cloud platform<\/a> through its digital subsidiary Xtelify in August 2025, built specifically as sovereign, telco-grade infrastructure for Indian enterprises. Executive vice chairman Gopal Vittal said during the company’s Q1 FY27 earnings call that Airtel added 11 customers that quarter alone, bringing the total to 33 at the time. Growth since then has pushed that figure to around 40.<\/p>\n

What’s driving manufacturers specifically toward sovereign infrastructure comes down to something fairly concrete. Factories now run connected machines, industrial sensors and automated production systems that generate enormous volumes of operational data in near real time, and companies increasingly want that data processed and stored on infrastructure they actually control, not scattered across servers they can’t fully account for. VE Commercial Vehicles is among the manufacturers already using the platform, and Vittal pointed to intellectual property protection and compliance requirements as key reasons this segment keeps growing.<\/p>\n

Beyond the sovereignty pitch, Airtel<\/a> is also picking up business in services enterprises can deploy quickly: disaster recovery, backup-as-a-service, storage-as-a-service and video surveillance-as-a-service. For manufacturers specifically, a technology outage doesn’t just knock a website offline. It can stall production schedules, disrupt inventory movement and break supplier coordination, so resilience carries real operational weight in this sector in a way it might not for a typical office-based business.<\/p>\n

The platform integrates with Airtel’s existing network infrastructure, connecting factories, offices, cloud environments and recovery sites securely, which matters for manufacturers running production across multiple locations who need consistent connectivity rather than a patchwork of separate systems stitched together after the fact.<\/p>\n

Vittal said larger sovereign cloud opportunities are beginning to surface around sensitive workloads specifically, a trend he’s tracked mostly in regulated industries and public-sector organizations so far. But as AI adoption<\/a> accelerates and more operational systems shift onto cloud platforms, similar pressures around data control are starting to show up in manufacturing too, and Airtel appears positioned to capture a meaningful share of that shift as it unfolds.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
