LG Uplus, meanwhile, bought local. KT, for its part, decided to build it themselves, at a cost of 1 trillion won.

SK Telecom announced its move on September 16, partnering with F5, the Seattle-based security company, to strengthen security across its growing AI cloud business. The telecom will act as both reseller and managed service provider for F5’s products, thereby becoming the first MSP in Korea authorized to work with F5 Distributed Cloud, the company’s cloud-based security platform. That role means SK Telecom will build and continuously manage the security layer sitting underneath customers’ AI cloud environments, rather than simply reselling someone else’s software.

The deal covers web application firewall protection, API security, DDoS mitigation, and bot defense, all aimed at securing AI workloads running across distributed infrastructure. F5 isn’t small, either, more than 80% of Fortune Global 500 companies reportedly use its technology, and the timing lines up neatly. F5 also opened a new point of presence in Korea on September 14, built to process traffic from applications spread across cloud, on-premises, and edge environments, thereby cutting latency and keeping security policy consistent as AI cloud workloads shift between locations.

What stands out, though, is that SK Telecom picked a foreign vendor over a domestic one for a core piece of its AI cloud strategy, without saying whether it seriously weighed Korean alternatives first. That lands at an odd moment. Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT and KISA have both flagged concern about overseas security firms dominating the domestic market, largely because those firms offer more integrated platforms than what’s typically available locally. In response, the government has pushed Korean security companies to build similar integrated platforms of their own.

Its rivals, however, took different routes, even as all three converge on the same priority: protecting the infrastructure behind their AI cloud ambitions. LG Uplus, for instance, acquired PAGO Networks last month, a Korean managed detection and response specialist, choosing instead to bring threat detection in-house. KT, similarly, is investing 1 trillion won over five years into its own zero-trust framework, AI-driven monitoring, and encryption systems supporting its AI cloud operations.

Three companies, three strategies, and ultimately, Korea’s AI cloud security market is about to find out which one actually holds up.

South Korea’s three biggest telecoms are all racing to secure their AI cloud businesses right now, and each one picked a different way to do it.
