It is about a decision the company made early on and never walked back: building its own infrastructure instead of licensing someone else’s.

Tim and Jonathan Brealey, hosting industry veterans, launched 20i in 2016. A decade later, the company hosts more than a million websites and has expanded from its original UK base into Dallas and, more recently, Singapore, following its growing international customer base. None of that is unusual for a hosting company that has scaled well. What is unusual is how much of the underlying technology 20i built itself rather than bought.

The company runs its own autoscaling cloud infrastructure, which adjusts resources automatically as demand shifts, and its own control panel, My20i, instead of licensing a third-party option like cPanel or Plesk. That choice sounds minor until you consider what it actually buys a company: control over its own roadmap.

Director Lloyd Cobb explained the logic directly. Owning the platform lets 20i take customer feedback and turn it into changes without waiting on a vendor’s release schedule or working around limitations someone else built into the software. He pointed to the pace of change in hosting over the past decade, WordPress becoming dominant, security threats growing more sophisticated, cloud infrastructure shifting shape, and AI arriving more recently, as exactly the kind of moving target that’s harder to track when a company depends on someone else’s product timeline.

That bet appears to be paying off in recognition, at least. 20i picked up Best Web Host at the PC Pro Awards three years running, from 2023 through 2025, and collected additional recognition for customer support, cloud hosting and innovation along the way.

The deeper question a ten-year mark like this actually raises isn’t whether 20i has grown, since the number of websites it hosts settles that easily. It’s whether building instead of buying holds up as an advantage over the next decade, especially as AI reshapes what customers expect a hosting platform to do automatically, rather than what a company controlling its own code can react to fastest.

20i just marked ten years in business, and the anniversary story here is not really about growth numbers.
