Karmada<\/a> just graduated to the top tier of Cloud Native Computing Foundation<\/a> projects, joining an exclusive list that includes Kubernetes itself. What actually matters here isn’t the badge. It’s what the project quietly lets big, sprawling companies do with the dozens of Kubernetes clusters they already run and can’t easily consolidate.<\/p>\n

The problem Karmada solves sounds mundane until you’re the one facing it. Once a company runs Kubernetes<\/a> across multiple clusters, clouds, and regions, which most large enterprises eventually do, coordinating deployments, failover and resource allocation across all of them becomes its own full-time headache. Karmada extends Kubernetes’ existing API to handle placement, propagation and multi-cluster autoscaling automatically, so teams manage a fleet of clusters roughly the same way they’d manage one.<\/p>\n

Bloomberg’s Michas Szacillo, an engineering team lead who also maintains the project, said Karmada has become foundational to how Bloomberg runs resilient infrastructure, automating disaster recovery and improving resource use in a way that let platform engineering teams operate with less manual overhead. Trip.com<\/a>‘s Honghui Yue described something similar: multiple clusters now function as one unified resource pool, with cross-cluster failover and large-scale workload migration happening without disrupting the applications running on top.<\/p>\n

The timing lines up with where infrastructure demand is actually heading. Karmada’s newest release adds scheduling built specifically for distributed AI training jobs, plus priority-based scheduling that makes sure critical workloads get resources first when GPU capacity runs tight, a problem nearly every AI-heavy company is dealing with right now. DaoCloud’s Kay Yan said the company is extending Karmada into its AI inference architecture as workloads increasingly need to run across multiple data centers at once.<\/p>\n

Since joining CNCF<\/a> as a sandbox project in 2021, Karmada has picked up more than 1,200 contributors from nearly 300 organizations, with production users spanning Alibaba Cloud, Huawei, SenseTime and Trip.com alongside Bloomberg and Wellhub. Getting to graduation required a third-party security audit and a formal governance structure, the kind of unglamorous groundwork CNCF requires before trusting a project with production infrastructure at this scale.<\/p>\n

The bigger picture: as AI training and inference increasingly span clouds, regions and specialized hardware, whoever solves multi-cluster coordination well ends up sitting underneath a lot of infrastructure other companies depend on without ever seeing directly.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
