Automattic&#8217;s answer to that gap arrived Monday at <a href=\"https:\/\/us.wordcamp.org\/2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">WordCamp U.S.<\/a>, and it starts in the classroom.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\">The company unveiled <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.com\/education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">WordPress.com Education<\/a>, a free suite built for teachers and their students. Each student gets a full WordPress.com domain, plus a free domain name on either .blog or .art, along with plug-in support. Teachers can hand out access for an entire year with no credit card and no trial period attached.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\">Automattic went out of its way to say this isn&#8217;t some scaled-down student version of the product. The plan includes 6 GB of storage, backups, staging sites, SFTP and SSH access, phpMyAdmin, and Studio Sync, essentially the same toolkit a paying customer would get. That matters for teachers who want students building real, working sites rather than a simplified mockup.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\">Once the free year ends, students face no pressure to commit. They can pay $2 a month, or $24 a year, to keep their site exactly as it is. If they skip that, nothing disappears. The site simply reverts to a free <a href=\"https:\/\/hostingdiscussion.com\/news\/wordpress-com-gives-ai-agents-ability-to-write-publish-manage-site-content-directly\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WordPress.com<\/a> page on a free domain, and every post, comment, and upload stays right where they left it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\">Automattic piloted the program with 5,000 students across 27 countries before this launch, and the early feedback leans strongly positive. Roughly 89% of participating educators said the program helped their students&#8217; employability, and about 82% said it boosted their entrepreneurial thinking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\">The real story here isn&#8217;t the storage limits or the free domains.
