NetApp<\/a> just bought JetStream Software<\/a>, and on paper the deal is about disaster recovery. Underneath that, it’s really about getting a foothold in accounts NetApp couldn’t reach before.<\/p>\n

JetStream’s technology protects VMware environments running on storage from other vendors and can recover those workloads onto NetApp’s own cloud services, including Azure NetApp Files. That matters because a lot of enterprises still run critical applications on VMware<\/a>, sitting on storage that has nothing to do with NetApp. Those companies were never really in NetApp’s addressable market until now.<\/p>\n

The logic behind the deal makes sense once you consider how enterprises actually make infrastructure decisions. Nobody rips out a working system just because a vendor would prefer they did. Applications carry dependencies. Downtime<\/a> costs money. Refactoring takes time that most IT teams don’t have to spare. So instead of asking customers to migrate production workloads outright, NetApp is offering something with a much lower bar: replicate your VMware environment for disaster recovery purposes, while your primary system stays exactly where it is.<\/p>\n

That’s a smaller ask, and it’s also a foot in the door. If a company’s disaster recovery setup on NetApp infrastructure proves solid, moving more workloads later becomes a much easier conversation. NetApp doesn’t need every VMware customer to migrate right away. It just needs enough of them to start rethinking how their systems get protected and where recovery happens, and that’s a considerably bigger pool than NetApp’s existing storage customers.<\/p>\n

There’s also a security angle worth noting. Disaster recovery used to be mostly about surviving hardware failures or site outages. Now it has to account for ransomware and other incidents that can make production data unusable without warning, which gives recovery architecture more strategic weight than it carried a few years ago.<\/p>\n

NetApp<\/a> hasn’t disclosed financial terms for the acquisition, and it hasn’t said much yet about integration timelines or how JetStream’s products will fit into its broader lineup. That leaves some real uncertainty for JetStream’s existing customers, at least for now.<\/p>\n

None of this guarantees migration follows. Testing, compliance requirements, and networking work don’t disappear just because disaster recovery went smoothly.
