Because the restriction covers foreign nationals both inside and outside the US, including some of Anthropic&#8217;s own employees, the company said complying meant disabling both models for every customer rather than trying to sort out access on a case-by-case basis. Anthropic&#8217;s other models remain available and unaffected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\">The government&#8217;s letter reportedly didn&#8217;t spell out its specific national security concern in detail, but Anthropic said its understanding is that officials believe someone found a way to bypass, or &#8220;jailbreak,&#8221; Fable 5&#8217;s safety restrictions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\">After reviewing a demonstration of the technique, Anthropic said it only surfaced a handful of previously known, fairly minor vulnerabilities, the kind that other publicly available AI models can also expose without needing any special workaround.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hostingdiscussion.com\/news\/anthropic-stakes-50b-on-u-s-data-centers-as-ai-infrastructure-race-escalates\/\">Anthropic<\/a> pushed back hard on the scope of the government&#8217;s response. The company said it spent thousands of hours red-teaming Fable&#8217;s safeguards before launch, working alongside the US government, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/ai-safety-institute\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">UK&#8217;s AI Safety Institute<\/a>, and several outside research groups, and that no tester found what the industry calls a universal jailbreak, one broad enough to unlock a wide range of dangerous capabilities.
