The new C9g and C9gd instances run on Graviton5 processors, and they ship with DDR5 memory running at 8800 megatransfers per second, which AWS says is the fastest memory speed currently available across any cloud instance on the market.

That matters more than it might initially sound. A significant chunk of compute time on demanding workloads gets wasted not on actual processing but on waiting for data to arrive. Graviton5 addresses that directly, packing in five times more L3 cache than the previous Graviton4 generation and tripling packet-processing performance. In practice, workloads spend less time sitting idle, which translates to faster results on tasks like video encoding, scientific modeling, and distributed analytics.

The two variants split along storage lines. C9g instances pair with Amazon Elastic Block Store and suit workloads like video encoding pipelines and batch processing jobs. C9gd instances add local NVMe SSD storage for applications needing low-latency access, delivering up to 30 percent higher throughput than their predecessors, a setup well suited to ad-serving engines and high-performance computing simulations.

AWS is also positioning both instance types for agentic AI workloads, where AI models handle complex, multi-step tasks autonomously rather than answering a single question and stopping. Those workloads tend to hit processors harder than traditional AI inference tasks, making the higher core counts and expanded cache on Graviton5 genuinely relevant rather than just a spec sheet talking point.

Security gets a notable upgrade too. C9g and C9gd are the first EC2 instances to support the AWS Nitro Isolation Engine, which tightens the boundaries between virtual machines by restricting access to memory, CPU states, and I/O devices to a minimal set of interfaces.

Both instance types come in 11 sizes, ranging from a single vCPU up to configurations packing 192 vCPUs and 384 gigabytes of memory. They’re available now in Ohio, Northern Virginia, Oregon, and Frankfurt, with more regions rolling out later this year.

AWS just added two more instance types to its EC2 lineup, and the headline feature isn’t the chip itself but what that chip does with memory.
